I actually wrote a massive piece on this. Will C&P.
Here’s my albums of the year and my thoughts on music this year. I’m into pop-punk and indie. These are all my opinion. Thanks for reading.
1. The 1975 – The 1975
Pretty much expected to be number 1 if you know me well. I don’t really shut up about this band. The album is almost perfect. The synths slowly fading in to the last chord on the piano this album was all I was looking forward to for the first half of the year and all I went on about in the second half. “Robbers” is an amazing soft ballad that probably gets the award of my own song of the year. “Chocolate” is more catchy than an STI and “Girls” has lyrics any boy wants to shout out. I really can’t praise this enough can I?
2. The Greatest Generation – The Wonder Years
Like most of TWY albums (Post The Upsides) they always have super awesome closers and great structure in the album itself. Definitely the best pop-punk album this year. Entertained me a lot during the first half of the year. “Passing Through a Screen Door” literally tears through your speakers and “Chaser” is epic. The closer, “I Just Want To Sell Out My Funeral” starts out slow, but the build up into the chorus is amazing and ends the album on a high. Only downside is I don’t connect with some of the songs, they just don’t do it for me. Pretty damn good songs that do connect though.
3. Common Courtesy – A Day To Remember
Up until its actual release I’d forget this was coming out. Mainly because if you followed the build up to this album you’d know A Day To Remember had a court case going on. I don’t want to get into that and more the album itself. The album is really solid and did really well sales-wise. Which like Mayday Parade and Panic surprised me a lot. “Right Back At It Again” is definitely my favourite. “I Surrender” stands out, but apart from that none of the other songs stand out to me. But, don’t get me wrong they all blend in really well and is awesome just to playthrough. I don’t really like the talking at the end of the album though. I get it’s meaningful, just I was hoping for a massive closer like “It Means A Lot To You” on Homesick.
4. Save Rock & Roll – Fall Out Boy
Fall Out Boy are back! Let me just fangirl a little about that again. The album is a good solid pop album and Patrick’s vocals are probably the best vocals out of all the albums on this list. “The Phoenix” is also probably the best opener on all the albums too. The closing track is awesome, so awesome my Mum even likes it (Seriously my Mum’s music taste is awful, that’s a lot!). The downside about the album is the fact it’s a lot lighter. I can understand all the guitars are used in fancy ways to make the more poppy sounds and I’m not expecting Take This To Your Grave 2.0, but I just wished for a bit more distortion. I mean Folie-a-deux had the mixture well. I mean “I Don’t Care” on that album was so bouncy and epic. Overall pretty good album though.
5. Heart Attack – Man Overboard
Number 5 is difficult, simply because 2013 hasn’t been too amazing. Yeah, I know there was Paramore, Panic, Mayday Parade and Arctic Monkeys, but this is MY list, I’ll get onto the first 3 in a bit. Man Overboards album literally got this spot due to amount of songs I particularly liked was higher than some of the others. “Boy Without Batteries” and “White Lies” are literally perfect songs. Other songs are pretty damn good on that album. It’s a good album sadly with a few weak songs to let it down. The closer is perfect, it’s been compared to “Soco Amaretto Lime” a lot and is your stereotypical pop-punk acoustic song. But who doesn’t love those?
Notables:
Peace – Kids In Glass Houses – It’s a nice solid album, shame some songs just don’t do it. Black Cloud feels like Matters At All 2.0 and should have been the song imo.
Monsters In The Closet – Mayday Parade – Couldn’t get into it. Just buy “Even Robots Need Blankets” for your “Miserable At Best” and “Sorry, Not Sorry” is just wow.
Paramore – Paramore – People really like the album. For me it’s too long. I don’t like the little interludes. Still probably need a proper sit down with it though.
The Panic Album – Yes, it’s name is too long. (Coming from the Fall Out Boy fanboy
) I actually really liked the first two songs, especially “Ms Jackson” I wish the theme continued. Didn’t like the rest. Sold really well, so well done to them.
Prism – Katy Perry – “Roar” is great, shame it’s a rip off pahaha. Probably my favourite Pop artist, but the album disappointed. “Double Rainbow” is one of the most adorable songs you’ll here this year though.
Sempiternal – Bring Me The Horizon – It’s a great album. :’)
Hopes for 2014
blink 182 – Now my second favourite band (The 1975 took top spot, shock! Horror!) they’re releasing an album next year. I’m just hoping for an album of “After Midnight” and “Pretty Little Girl”.
Yellowcard – Please tell me they’ll do something. I need my “Always Summer” 2.0
Enter Shikari – Have you heard “Rat Race” and “Radiate”? They destroy anything on Flash Flood of Colour. I need an album of those. They’re closers are always pretty good too.
Taking Back Sunday – They’re with Hopeless now. Enough said.
You Me At Six – Have you heard “Lived A Lie”.
Anything to be next years surprise like The 1975.
